Starting Over
Leave behind the things you thought you needed--
the pots and pans and tacky souvenirs--
and set to fire all the things that we did:
the journal that we kept for all those years,
our pictures, poems, set them in their bins
and let their chalky ashes catch the air.
Release all cords, relations, lovers, peers
the intimacy manufactured there
is found as easily another where.
A new self seek. A new place build, again.
It's easier to ruin than repair,
and easier to forfeit than to win.
Abandon, burn, and say goodbye. You'll find
the very things you thought you left behind.
