Straight Forward

I can’t blame you for being cautious.
Anyone who has been burnt by a man
Is likely to tread gingerly,
Breathe incompletely,
Expect a sudden gunshot.

But I am something new.
Scientists haven’t even
Genussed and specied me.
I’ve defied labeling,
So be on notice:

You will never be my fallback position
Or my greener grass.
I won’t expect or resent,
Withhold or edit,
Put on any face—especially a brave one.

So relax. I love you.
People are more resilient
Than you give them credit for.
And truth withstands
The burden of trust.
